In part because I graduated from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, as well as being an educator (Brown University 1970-75) I have been a student of the liberal arts programs on the ground (Brown University) It is my belief that educational programs should incorporate studying art and other subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist that earned an MA in 1967 and earned a Ph.D. in the field of ethnomusicology from UCLA. The program in ethnomusicology that I began here at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) can be found in the department of music at the College of Letters and Science. I love exploring my interests in a variety of areas as well as seeing the larger overall picture. I very much enjoy teaching students in the undergraduate level (majors as well as non-majors for whom I have written three books - Music in India the Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically and Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) as well as graduate students. I also have times where I'm mostly a professor as well as periods during which I perform administrative duties (such as chair of the Department of Music, 1983-1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising, 1992-1998, and Chair of Deans of College of Letters and Science, 1994-1998).
